Book Launch and conference: A Lexicon to the Latin Text of the Theological Writings of Emanuel Swedenborg

Date: Thu, 17/04/2008 - 10:00am

Venue: Friends Meeting House, 173 Euston Road, London NW1

This Neo-Latin lexicon (or dictionary) was edited by the late John Chadwick, the classical scholar who was and still is renowned throughout the world for his work in the decipherment of the ancient Minoan script Linear B. But he should also be remembered as the lexicographer who served for a number of years as an editor of the Oxford Latin Dictionary.

The principal speakers at this conference will be:

10.15-11.15am

Professor Anna Morpurgo Davies, colleague and friend of John Chadwick, who will speak about Lexicography

11.30am-12.30pm

Professor Dirk Sacré, co-author of Companion to Neo-Latin Studies, who will speak about the current state of Neo-Latin scholarship

12.35-2.00pm

Lunch, obtainable in ‘Friends’ own restaurant or others nearby

2.00-3.00pm

Revd Dr Jonathan Rose, John Chadwick’s appointed successor, who will speak about the newly published lexicon.

3.15-4.15pm

Questions and discussion

Although this lexicon covers the works of a single author it is thought to be the first dictionary, as distinct from a word-list, of Neo-Latin words and their usages. The hope is that it will become an aid not only to Swedenborgian scholars and to Neo-Latinists, but also to theologians, philosophers, historians, and others who handle the texts and documents of those in recent centuries who wrote in Latin.

Registration and Coffee 9.30-10.00am.

Fee to attend £30.00 (students £15.00).To RSVP or order your copy of this prestigious publication or for any further information please contact the President (Revd John Elliott) or the Secretary (Mr Richard Lines) at
